Recipe for Raw Jackfruit Palya
- Raw jackfruit small- 1 no.
- Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
- Salt- 2 tsp
- Jaggery powder – 1.5 tsp
- Tamarind – Marble sized
- Fresh coconut – 1/2 cup
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Red chillies- 3 nos.
- Coconut oil – 3 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Split black gram lentils – 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves – Few
Apply enough oil to the palms and peel the thorny skin from raw jackfruit. Cut in to half horizontally.
Using a sharp knife, chop the jackfruit in to small shreds. I have used up 2.5 cups of shredded raw jackfruit in this recipe.
Heat coconut oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, lentils and curry leaves. Let them splutter, then include shreds of raw jackfruit. Add turmeric powder and some water. Stir well.
Cover it with lid and cook for about 10 minutes or until the veggie is soft. Include salt, jaggery and tamarind water. Continue cooking for few more minutes.
Next add coconut, mustard seeds and red chillies to the mixer. Grind them together to coarse paste. Add this to cooked veggie in the pan. Mix well and cook for few seconds. Switch it off once done.
Very unique and delicious halasina kayi palya (raw jackfruit stir fry) is ready to serve with rice-rasam.
Choose the jackfruit that is raw and tender.
The jackfruit should be chopped in to small, bite sized shreds.
The coconut plus mustard seeds masala should be coarsely ground. Do not add water while grinding.
Adjust the spice and salt as per your taste buds.
